Rogers Music Overview

The Rogers Music Program is one of the top music programs in the Long Beach Unified School District with over one-third of Rogers students enrolled in one of six classes. Annually, the Intermediate Band, Intermediate Orchestra, Advanced Band, and Advanced Orchestra participate in SCSBOA adjudicated festivals and consistently receive excellent and superior ratings. During the 2018-2019 school year, the intermediate groups travelled to Disneyland to participate in a Disney Performing Arts Workshop while the advanced groups travelled to Santa Barbara to perform in the SBCC Wind and String Festival. Additionally, 30 Rogers musicians were accepted to the LBUSD Honor Band and Orchestra and four Rogers musicians were accepted in to the SCSBOA All-Southern California Honor Groups.

How to Join

* No prior musical experience is needed to enroll in beginning classes.

* Instruments are loaned out for FREE!

Incoming 6th graders will select an elective during the online middle school enrollment process in January or February of their 5th grade year. Current 6th and 7th graders will select their elective in May, during the school's elective sign-up period. Simply select band or orchestra as your first choice depending on which instrument you would like to play. Band instrument options: flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon, trumpet, trombone, French horn, euphonium, tuba and percussion (snare/bass drum, bells, cymbals, etc). Orchestra instrument options: violin, viola, cello, and bass.

Instrument Petting Zoo

Don't know what to play? Come to our annual Instrument Petting Zoo on Thursday, May 9, 2019 at 6:30 p.m. in the Rogers Auditorium. Students can see what it’s like to hold and play the different instruments in the orchestra and band.

Experienced Musicians Can Audition for Intermediate or Advanced Groups

If you already play and instrument and would like to test out of the beginning class, you can try out for a spot in an intermediate or advanced class.  Auditions will be held in the Rogers Music Room 2101 (next to the auditorium) on May 16, 2019 from 3:40 - 5:30 p.m.   Just bring your instrument and any music that you know.

Parent Support Group

We are very fortunate at Rogers to have a wonderful group of music parents who volunteer their time to help chaperone events and raise funds for the program. Parents can help as much or as little as they want. The parent support group meets three or four times throughout the year, spending most of the time coordinating our annual scholarship concert and dinner.

Annual Fundraiser Dinner/Concert

The dinner/concert fundraiser has become the highlight of our year. Each year we hold a concert in the Wilson High School Gym that includes a catered dinner, auction, and opportunity drawing. This event raises money to purchase new instruments for the school, hire private music coaches to work with the students in small groups, pay for the jazz band and advanced orchestra instruction, and to purchase new sheet music.

Music Coaches

All the music classes will have private music coaches working with small groups of students throughout the year. These professional coaches reinforce the skills taught in class while also providing advanced technique specific to each instrument.

Mr. Hamilton

In 2000, Mr. Hamilton graduated as valedictorian from the University of California at Los Angeles with a B.A. in music education.  During, and shortly after college, he served as a teacher's assistant at John Adams Middle School in Santa Monica and as a part time music teacher at Millikan High School in Long Beach.  In 2001, he earned his current position, teaching band, orchestra, and jazz at Rogers Middle School in Long Beach.  While at Rogers, Mr. Hamilton was awarded Teacher of the Year by the Long Beach Council PTA for the 2007-2008 school year and honorable mention for same award during the 2004-2005 school year.  Both his advanced band and advanced orchestra have received unanimous superiors at SCSBOA festivals.  In the summer of 2009, Mr. Hamilton founded and instructed the Vivace Music Camp for elementary musicians and in 2013, he started the Long Beach Summer Music Academy for middle school musicians.  In 2010, he earned his Master’s Degree from the American Band College in Southern Oregon.
